Newborn Baby Edison – His First Month, The Studio Sessions

One of the reasons Chris and I chose the house that we bought last year was because it has an area with two small rooms that I could use for my office and photo studio. We have been so busy with other projects, pregnancy bed rest, and a bunch of other unexpected events, and had not been able to use the photo studio before our son was born. I was determined to get in a ton of photos of him once we got home from the hospital. Unfortunately, my postpartum recovery was a lot slower than I had expected. I had excruciating pain from Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction during my pregnancy, and the pain did not completely go away once Edison was born. You can read more about my pregnancy and post-partum recovery on my personal blog here.

With the excruciating pain, I was only able to photograph Edison in short bursts of time each day, usually no more than about 5 minutes per day. We spent a lot of time that first month, slowly working on getting all of the pictures I wanted. I was disappointed at first that it took me so long to take all the pictures I had planned, but in the end, I am really happy that it worked out that way. Instead of getting one or two days worth of pictures in the first couple of weeks, we have lots of pictures from his whole first month, gradually showing little tiny changes. The first set starts with his second week (our first week home), and the last few at the end when Edison was a month old. I particularly love the very last picture…it is almost as if he is saying, “Enough pictures, Mom!”.

Newborn Baby Edison – “I Prayed for this Child”

For most of my life, I was under the impression that I would never be able to have a child of my own. When Chris and I were engaged, we went to the Infant of Prague chapel on a trip to Europe and prayed with all our hearts that the Lord would somehow allow us to have a family of our own. We each got a rosary from the gift shop and prayed the rosary often after that trip, hoping that our prayers for a baby would be answered. Somehow, after a long difficult journey (which you can read more about on my personal blog here), we were blessed with our baby boy, Edison.

While I was pregnant with Edison, there were two particular Bible verses that stood out to me and gave me reassurance despite all the issues I was facing during my pregnancy. I knew that with prayer and faith, we would soon be meeting the happy little face I had been dreaming about for so long. One verse was, “I prayed for this child and the Lord granted my request.” 1 Samuel 2:27. The other was, “You formed my inmost being, You knit me in my mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13. I knew that while I was working on knitting little hats for Edison and making decorations for his room, God was handling the details of knitting together our beautiful baby.

I wanted to do a photoshoot with Edison to reflect these verses once he was born. I made some of the decor in Edison’s room around these verses (seen here). In the spring, there are lots of fields of wild mustard flowers near our house. Whenever I see them, they remind me of Matthew 17:20, “He said to them, ‘Because of your little faith. Amen,  I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’” I was so happy that this shoot timed out perfectly…just after Edison was born, the mustard flowers started to show up in bloom everywhere.

Newborn Baby Edison – His Namesake Session

We have had a lot of people ask us why we decided to name our baby boy Edison. When I was pregnant, we considered a lot of names. Most were slightly unusual, and many were somehow nature or outdoors themed since Chris and I both love the outdoors. I had many dreams about our son even before he was conceived, and in one of the dreams while I was pregnant, I saw myself referring to him as Edison. It was not a name that we had even considered before then, but when I mentioned it to Chris, we both knew that was the perfect name for our baby.

While I was pregnant, this little guy often tapped out little “messages” to me, almost as if in his own form of baby Morse Code. When Chris was to my right, Edison would tap toward that direction, wanting Chris to rub my belly. If Chris was sitting to my left, Edison would tap on my left side. Every day, Edison played little tapping games with me. We would go back and forth repeating numerical tapping patterns through my belly. It was so cute! We found out later (after we had chosen his name) that Thomas Edison was very into Morse Code from a young age. :)

With an engineer daddy, an engineer-turned-photographer mommy, and an engineer/electrical professor grandpa, Edison is clearly the perfect name for our little guy. :) While we were trying to have a baby, we went through a long difficult journey and lost a number of pregnancies before Edison (you can read my pregnancy journey here). Chris put it perfectly…Edison is our little light bulb after a dark and difficult journey.

Happy Earth Day from Our Little Family!

Recently, we welcomed our newest little family member…our baby boy, Edison! We have been quite busy taking tons of photos of him, and will be posting all of his little newborn photoshoots soon. In the meantime, I had to share these photos from today in celebration of Earth Day. We always say that in our house, every day is Earth Day, and many days are Arbor Day (we love planting trees anywhere we can find more space!). To celebrate Earth Day, Edison is all dressed up in some of his favorite little organic cotton pieces.

While I was pregnant with Edison, I had to spend the majority of my pregnancy on bed rest, and was unable to tend to our garden the way I normally do (you can read about my unusual pregnancy experience on my lifestyle blog here). I was very happy to find today that despite months of neglect, certain areas of our garden were still being productive! This is our first garden harvest of the year and I am very excited. While I was unable to tend to growing everything I would have liked in the garden, we are happy beyond words with what I was spending my time working on growing…our amazing little boy! :)

Below: baby Edison peacefully relaxing in the grass while I gathered the fruits and veggies, and a full view of all of the treasures from our garden today! I found tons of lemons, oranges, kumquats, limes, figs, artichokes, mint and other herbs, and a massive beet that I planted from seed and forgot about. :)

My Own Maternity Session!

When a photographer first finds out she is pregnant, she comes up with tons of ideas for her own maternity session. In my case anyway, I had a huge mental list of all the amazing places I wanted us to go for my maternity session. Unfortunately, since I had such an unusual pregnancy, we were not able to do any of the things I had originally planned. Most of my pregnancy was spent on bed rest. You can read the whole story on my personal blog here.

We kept hoping that my conditions would improve at some point, and I would be able to go do at least some of the things I had in mind. As I got close to the end of the pregnancy and I was still on bed rest, I realized that some pictures are better than no pictures (even if they were not what I had originally been planning). We decided to take a few pictures depicting how I spent most of my pregnancy: curled up in bed with our four furry kids. :) They all did an amazing job keeping me entertained and keeping me company through the long months of boredom!

As soon as I made it to the huge goal of full term was allowed off pregnancy bed rest, we wanted to take some additional pictures. However, once I was allowed up and around, my mobility had started to decline thanks to the extreme pain from my symphysis pubis dysfunction symptoms. Earlier in the pregnancy, I was not allowed to get up, and later in the pregnancy I was not able to get up much. So, we still could not do all of the elaborate things I had planned, but we are happy that we were able to get some pictures!

Our Newest Family Member – Stella!

Earlier in my pregnancy, we went into the pet store for a new litterbox for the cats, and I saw this little face and fell in love. :) We had been talking about getting a second dog for a while, and Stella was the perfect addition to our growing family. She has been such an amazing little friend and companion through the past few months, never leaving my side, no matter how boring my bed rest situation got (you can read more about my unusual pregnancy here).

The rescue agency that we adopted her from said that Stella had a rough first couple of years of life. They found her dirty and wild, wandering the streets. When the vet went in to neuter her, they noted that even though she was only two years old, she had already had several litters of puppies. It is assumed that she was being used as a puppy breeding mama, and the litters may have been very close together. At some point, she ran away from that life and decided to rough it on the streets.

We are so happy to have her join our family! She was such a good girl for this photoshoot. I set up the suitcase, and without any instruction, she went right into it and started posing. A natural born model. :) She loves cuddling with me, dancing to the Supremes, getting bows put in her hair, and dressing up in cute little outfits. She also loves anything pink. :) More pictures of her and all of our pets coming soon in my special maternity session coming soon!

Megan & Andrew’s Wedding!

Weddings are our favorite thing to shoot together. Last wedding season, we made the tough decision that we were going to select just one amazing wedding to shoot. We were planning that I would be having major surgery so that we would be able to have a baby. I ended up not being a candidate for the surgery, but the decision to just shoot one wedding ended up working in our favor since I ended up on about 7+ months of pregnancy bed rest. You can read more about our journey toward becoming parents on my personal blog here.

I am so glad that we ended up having Megan & Andrew’s amazing wedding as the wedding we shot this past season. Everything about their wedding day was so beautiful…the location, the details, the couple themselves, and their love for each other! The amazingly crafty bride created many of the decor details herself, and the gorgeous vintage furniture and other details were supplied by Tasteful Tatters.

Congratulations again Megan & Andrew! We wish you a lifetime of happiness together!

Julie & Family – Maternity Session

I shot this session a while back, and have been meaning to blog it for a while now. Julie and her family of three are now a family of four! We did this shoot at the beginning of my own pregnancy, and unfortunately I wasn’t allowed to continue shooting after this point in my own pregnancy. I can’t wait to do another session with this gorgeous family in the future, and finally get to meet their new baby boy! :)

Our Furry Kids & Their Gardening Chores

I (Alicia) took these photos a while back, and have been meaning to post them for quite some time. Now we actually have another doggie that has been added to the family, not pictured here, but she will have her own session soon! All of our furry kids love their outdoor time with me in the garden in the morning, and they have each developed their own unique set of “gardening chores”, which actually helps me quite a bit. :)

First up is Fluffy. He LOVES munching on the marigolds.

Fluffy’s “chore” is helping me get rid of errant weeds throughout the garden. While he has not learned to pull them out roots and all, he does quite a good job of munching away at any weeds that pop up in my flower and vegetable beds. :) Here he is, hard at work….

Pearl loves lounging under the hibiscus trees and in between rows of vegetables. She is quite a glamorous little girl. :)

Pearl’s “chore” is being my expert bug hunter. I don’t have to worry much at all about pest control in the garden because Pearl does such a good job. :) Here she is, stalking her prey….

Shombay is responsible for keeping an eye on the cats, and letting me know if anyone goes into an area they aren’t allowed (e.g. where Chris keeps his saws and other tools). He really does come and nudge me if someone is up to mischief (99% of the time that would be Fluffy). Shombay is also responsible for keeping out the aggressive and rude neighbor cat. He does a pretty good job. :)

While technically not pets, we love all of our butterflies and bees for helping us so much with our garden. :)

As it starts to get a little warm outside, the cats start to head back toward the house, and lounge in the patio, letting me know they are ready to go back inside the house. :)

Megan & Andrew’s Engagement Session

Megan & Andrew are tying the knot!  When they told us how they have a shared love of sailing, and would love to do a nautical themed engagement shoot, we were so excited.  We all had so much fun with this shoot, and we felt a special bond with this couple…she is from California, and he is from Texas, just like us!  They are so giddy in love and absolutely adorable!  Their amazingly beautiful wedding is coming soon to the blog!
